A planned protest by environmental activists against the World Championships ski events in Trondheim, scheduled for March 7, has been cancelled. The activist group, Folk mot fossilmakta, had intended to stage a peaceful demonstration during the men's 50-kilometer race, highlighting the connection between fossil energy production and winter sports. However, recent dialogue between the athletes and the activists led to the decision to cancel the on-slope protest.
Ragnhild Kvist Simonsen of Folk mot fossilmakta stated that the group is instead forming a coalition with the athletes to press the International Ski Federation (FIS) to prioritize environmental accountability and climate-focused partnerships. Several athletes, including James Clugnet and Julia Kern, met with the activists to discuss these urgent matters, demonstrating a shared concern for climate change and the impact of fossil fuels in sponsorships.
The group's initiative highlights a growing acknowledgment within the sports community of the urgent need to address climate issues, a sentiment echoed by the athletes involved. A statement signed by 27 athletes expressed their commitment to tackling climate issues and seeking viable solutions without causing disruptions to the competition.
