Pogostan hiihto perutaan lumipulan takia
Sunday's mass ski event, Pogostan hiihto, one of Finland's easternmost traditional skiing events in Ilomantsi, has been canceled. The organizers announced that this year's event won’t take place due to unusually poor snow conditions.
There have been very few snowfalls throughout the winter, and while some light snowfall is forecasted for the next couple of weeks, it’s insufficient to prepare the course properly. The event chairperson, Raija Tahvanainen, stated that they assessed the situation and concluded that producing artificial snow was not reasonable due to the upcoming rise in temperatures.
Originally established in 1977, the Pogostan skiing event has been canceled only twice before: once for a lack of snow and once due to COVID-19. The event is now scheduled to take place again on March 14 next year.
