Petter Northug, a multiple-time champion regarded as one of the greatest cross-country skiers in history, is set to make his competitive return this season following his retirement from professional skiing. He will participate in the iconic season-opening race in Beitostølen this November, marking his first competitive outing since 2018, when he was at the height of his career.

In a recent interview with Norwegian TV2, Northug expressed his excitement about returning to the competition scene and his eagerness to reestablish a routine in competitive skiing. He plans to compete in both the classic sprint and the freestyle 10km events.

Despite facing numerous personal challenges during his active career, including controversies surrounding substance use, Northug is now concentrating fully on his training. He is keen to make regular appearances in races once again. Last season, he was unable to compete in Muonio due to an injury; however, he did achieve impressive results later on through a family collaboration at the Norwegian sprint championships.

Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Northug is optimistic for a smooth start. He believes his body has been responding well to training, and he is determined to follow a more traditional competition schedule this year.
