Remarkable Recovery of Perttu Hyvärinen – The Skier Mentioned Surprising Aids
Perttu Hyvärinen is preparing to make a remarkable return to the World Cup circuit just five weeks after a challenging injury, showcasing a surprising resilience and determination in his rehabilitation.
As the cross-country skiing World Cup kicks off in Davos, Hyvärinen aims to compete in the 20-kilometer classic time trial event, despite sustaining a significant ankle injury during a routine run about a month ago.
Reflecting on the incident, he attributed the injury to carelessness or fatigue from previous training camps. "It was my own fault," he admitted.
Having emerged as one of Finland's top skiers in recent years, Hyvärinen confessed that the injury momentarily darkened his outlook. However, the subsequent developments offered a glimmer of hope. "We managed to get to quality rehabilitation work very quickly. I underwent physiotherapy every other day and was already using a stationary bike just a few days post-injury. I’m satisfied with the rehabilitation process and its quick progression," he shared.
Hyvärinen explained that he suffered a rupture in three ligaments, one of which was completely torn. Despite still requiring about three months for complete healing, he's grateful for the progress he’s made thus far.
He’s even been back on skis about a week post-injury, initially limited to using only one leg on downhill slopes but has since regained the ability to skate ski nearly normally. Hyvärinen commented on how encouraging the rehabilitation has been, stating, "I’ve quickly regained the ability to kick with my skis, which I didn’t expect. During our practice on Friday, I was already able to kick relatively normally."
As he approaches Sunday’s competition, Hyvärinen remains grounded about his expectations. The high altitude and demanding course in Davos mean he plans to utilize ample tape for support as he navigates the tricky sections. His immediate goal is to finish the race and acknowledges that the time away from competition may affect his performance, but he remains optimistic about the outcome. "I’m sure this injury will show during the competition, but it's still surprisingly good. I’ll approach the race with positive thoughts," he concluded.
