Norwegians Suspect Iivo Niskanen of Feigning Illness – 'He Has Complained About Being Sick Before'

Finnish cross-country champion Iivo Niskanen has announced that he fell ill with influenza after the Falun World Cup events. This news has raised questions among Norwegian skiing experts about the authenticity of his illness, especially with the FIS World Championships in Trondheim 2025 fast approaching.

Norwegian elite skier Simen Hegstad Krüger expressed his doubts, recalling that Niskanen has complained about being sick in the past – a claim he considers exaggerated. Krüger stated, “If it really is influenza, it is very unfortunate. But I have heard him complain about sickness before, and it has always seemed like exaggeration. I hope he is truly ready when the races start.”

In addition, world champion Emil Iversen questioned whether Niskanen’s claims are genuine, wondering if the reported illness is simply another instance of overdramatization. Norwegian coach Eirik Myhr Nossum, however, believes that if Niskanen is indeed sick, it would be a severe blow for his team, though he dismisses the idea of any psychological game being played.

Yle sports expert Ville Nousiainen added that recovering to a winning condition in just one week is unlikely, noting that while it might be possible to regain sufficient fitness to compete, reaching peak form in such a short time is doubtful. With several key races on the schedule, including an upcoming 10 km classical race and relay events, all eyes will be on Niskanen’s condition as the championships draw closer.

The controversy has sparked a broader discussion in the Nordic skiing community, with Norwegian media and experts closely scrutinizing the Finnish athlete’s recent behavior. As the World Championships approach, the true state of Niskanen’s health—and his ability to perform—remains to be seen.
