Norwegian World Championship Scare in Cogne: 'Surprised by How Strong My Finish Was'

Norwegian cross-country skiing star Harald Østberg Amundsen returned like a whirlwind to the World Cup circuit by claiming a dominant victory in the 10km freestyle race in Cogne. Amundsen, who had been absent from international competitions after breaking off his Tour de Ski due to illness, demonstrated that his World Championship form is on the rise.
Commentator Jørn Sundby highlighted Amundsen’s explosive performance during the race, noting that the 26-year-old accelerated continually to secure the win ahead of his two Norwegian teammates. Iver Tildheim Andersen finished in second place, closely followed by Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget, while Swedish skier Edvin Anger, known for his sprint prowess, managed an impressive fourth.
In another twist to the day’s events, World Cup favorite Johannes Høsflot Klæbo was forced to drop out of the race due to illness, meaning he will miss the competitive action in Italy as he returns home to Norway for recovery. Klæbo is now set to resume training in Switzerland and is expected to participate in the upcoming races in Falun before the World Championships in Granåsen begin later this month.
Amundsen himself expressed his surprise at his own strong finish, attributing his success to having ample energy and feeling better at altitude on the day of the race. His performance not only marks a promising comeback but also raises expectations for Norway’s prospects at the forthcoming World Championships starting on February 26 in Trondheim.
