Norwegian 24-Year-Old Surprises: – It's Crazy
Originally published in Eurosport on December 28, 2024
Kristin Austgulen Fosnæs surprised in the Tour de Ski opening.
The racing environment is incredibly competitive, and on Saturday, the sprint events kicked off in Toblach. Every expected Norwegian sprinter advanced past the prologue, except for Therese Johaug, who failed to make it through.
In the semifinals, only Kristin Austgulen Fosnæs (24) advanced to the finals from the Norwegian group. In the final, Jessie Diggins emerged as the strongest competitor and claimed victory. Fosnæs finished fourth, closely trailing Nadine Fähndrich (third place) and Jasmi Joensuu (second place).
'What a start to the tour. It felt great getting better and better as I went along, and just being so close to the podium is incredible. I'm really happy,' Fosnæs said to Viaplay.
Before Saturday's race, Fosnæs had never made it to a World Cup sprint final, with her best result being a 12th place.
'Oh my God, she finished fourth, that’s insane! I’m so proud,' teammate Helene Marie Fossesholm told VG.
All the events in this year's Tour de Ski are being hosted in Italy, running until January 5. On Sunday, the women will compete in a 15 km mass start in classic style. Jessie Diggins is the reigning champion.
