Promising talent Milla Grosberghaugen Andreassen (19) is currently in Sweden, competing among stars like Frida Karlsson and Jonna Sundling after being denied entry to the Beitosprinten in Norway. This restriction has raised concerns among experts and her father, who feel that talented young athletes should be allowed to challenge themselves at higher levels.
NRK’s cross-country skiing expert Martin Johnsrud Sundby commented on the importance of allowing juniors to compete with seniors, citing his own positive experiences as a junior racer. He emphasized that young athletes like Andreassen are missing out on significant competitive experiences due to current regulations. According to Sundby, many successful athletes today, including Jakob Ingebrigtsen, started at a young age and showed they could compete with the best.
Ulf Morten Aune, the head coach of the Norwegian national team, acknowledged the frustration among juniors but stated that there is a need for careful management of young talents in sports. He pointed to extensive research indicating the challenges related to early competition and emphasized the responsibility to ensure young athletes are matched appropriately.
Milla's father, Ola Andreassen, expressed disappointment over the limitations placed on junior competitors, insisting that if athletes are skilled enough, they should be given the opportunity to compete at any level. He voiced his frustration during an interview with Swedish media, highlighting the imbalance in competition rules between Sweden and Norway.
Milla herself echoed this sentiment, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to compete in Sweden despite the disappointment of being sidelined in her home country. Therese Johaug, a veteran athlete, also called for a reevaluation of the regulations, underscoring the need for junior athletes to experience high-level competition.
This situation has sparked a broader discussion on the nature of competition for young athletes and the importance of fostering talent through opportunities in elite sporting events.
