Little Snow Winter Challenges Skiers in Eastern Finland – Classic Ski Trails Still Scarce Due to Insufficient Snow

This winter, the low snowfall has made it challenging for skiers in Eastern Finland, particularly in Joensuu, Kuopio, and Kontiolahti, where ski trails cannot be adequately groomed. Reports suggest trails may only be operational where there is enough snow to form a stable surface for skiing. The article highlights the situation at various ski centers, noting that some areas, such as Kontiolahti, are managing to maintain a few trails thanks to slightly better snowfall.

At Kontiolahti, traditional skiing is available at the shooting range as well as in the village and on the lighted trails of Ukonharju. However, Joensuu is grappling with difficulties in setting up classic ski trails due to insufficient snow cover, indicating that about 15 more centimeters of snow are required for better trail maintenance. Meanwhile, Joensuu City’s maintenance planner mentioned that while some areas are beginning to see compacted trails developed through snow platforming, snow depth remains a significant issue.

Meanwhile, the condition of skating ski trails has turned out to be better—with access to public skating areas across downtown Joensuu and Kontiolahti, allowing skaters to take advantage of the smoother ice surfaces that have been frozen since the mild weather.

In Kuopio, only one classic skiing trail is operational, and officials are keenly waiting for snow to improve conditions on the trails. The maintenance teams in Joensuu emphasize caution when skiing to avoid damaging equipment on the rocky trails that are currently exposed.

The winter sports facilities express willingness and readiness to maintain skiing paths as soon as the weather allows for better conditions.
