Remi Lindholm impressed in the last World Cup cross-country skiing race before the upcoming World Championships, despite a dramatic collision in Falun. In the men's 20 km free technique mass start, Lindholm, still struggling compared to earlier in the season, was involved in a collision with Jan Thomas Jenssen. Lindholm later described the encounter as a sort of personal victory given his recent struggles, recalling that he had once achieved his best World Cup placement in Östersund back in December 2023.
During the second lap, the drama unfolded when a Norwegian skier, identified as Jan Thomas Jenssen, tackled Lindholm from behind. “The Norwegian tackled from the back – he flew off the track, and I ended up landing on my back,” Lindholm explained. He lost approximately twenty places as a result of the collision. Jenssen, who finished 42nd, suffered a dislodged ski and broken bindings, and noted with humor that his rear end was badly bruised, remarking that it even appeared as if he had done something else entirely.
According to NRK, the incident occurred as Jenssen was in the process of overtaking Lindholm. Jenssen explained that Lindholm’s ski was pushed outward during the maneuver, sending him off course. In another part of the race, Finnish cross-country skiing star Iivo Niskanen, who had started at the front, dropped back early due to tight racing conditions. Niskanen expressed some disappointment about the crowded start but remained positive about his performance overall, crediting his skis for performing well.
Norwegian Pål Golberg won the race, finishing ahead of American Gus Schumacher and Norwegian Harald Østberg Amundsen. After the race, Golberg mimicked what has been described as Iivo Niskanen’s signature “microphone drop” gesture, further fueling post-race discussions in both media and the Nordic skiing community.
The intense race in Falun delivered unexpected twists and underlined the high level of competition at the international stage, setting the stage for the forthcoming World Championships.
