Lahti, a city with a rich history in winter sports, has officially been selected to host the 2029 Nordic World Ski Championships following a decision by the International Ski Federation on July 4th. In preparation for this prestigious event, Lahti is required to upgrade its sports complex, focusing on enhancing facilities such as the spectator stands and ski jumping hill. The estimated cost of these renovations is around five million euros.

Previously, Lahti poured significant resources into its sports infrastructure for the 2017 World Championships. The city invested over fifty million euros, which funded the construction of a new sports and exhibition center, extensive renovations to the main stand, and upgrades to the ski jumping hills. Additional funds were allocated for improving electronic and data systems to support modern sporting events.

The 2029 Championships are anticipated to provide a substantial economic boost to the Lahti region, with projections suggesting a direct economic impact of over forty million euros. While there may be a decline in state subsidies for sports infrastructure, local officials are optimistic about the financial prospects of hosting this event.

Sirpa Korkatti, the chairperson of the Ski Association, expressed confidence that insights gained from previous championships will pave the way for greater financial success this time around. Although the 2017 event left the association with a two-million-euro debt owed to the city, there is hope that increased sponsorship interest and adjustments to ticket pricing will improve the financial outcome of future events.
