Kerttu Niskanen has expressed her intention to not participate in the traditional 50-kilometer race at Salpausselkä this Sunday if the organizers decide to prepare the tracks inappropriately. She has been assessing the traditional race tracks and found them to be dangerously icy, stating, "If the organizers decide to make such a blunder and prepare the tracks in the evening, I will not line up at all. That would be a catastrophe."
She has emphasized the need for the organizers to act wisely, advocating for the tracks to be prepared early on Sunday morning before the race, ensuring they are safe for competitors.
Niskanen's decision is influenced by her ongoing battle for third place in the general World Cup standings against Norway's Astrid Øyre Slind. The financial implications are also significant, as finishing in fourth place yields €13,500 less in prize money than third.
The women's 50-kilometer event is scheduled for 9:30 AM on Sunday, March 21, 2025.
