Frida Karlsson, a prominent figure in Swedish cross-country skiing, is curious about the form in which Therese Johaug will return this winter. In a recent interview with the news agency TT while training in Italy, Karlsson reflected on the challenges that await her in the competition ahead.

"Of course, she’s welcome back, but the question is, where does she stand now? Johaug has been our benchmark for many years, the athlete we have consistently aimed to surpass. Before the 2021/2022 season, I tailored my training specifically to beat Therese. I managed to do it twice," Karlsson shared.

In the lead-up to the 2022/2023 season, Karlsson, along with teammates Linn Svahn and Maja Dahlqvist, made the decision to step outside the Swedish national team. However, a year later, they rejoined.

"I noticed a significant difference last season," Karlsson noted, emphasizing the increased flexibility in her training regimen that allowed her greater autonomy to train alone or with smaller groups. During altitude training camps, however, the entire national team is present, alongside several younger athletes.

"It’s crucial that we share our knowledge and experiences. It would feel wrong to not embrace this team spirit. I remember how inspired I felt when Charlotte Kalla won the Tour de Ski in 2008. That moment really made us feel like we were on the same team," she reminisced.

Five months ago, Karlsson set a tentative retirement date for after the Falun World Championships in 2027. While she still intends to stick to that timeline, she remains open to the possibility of extending her career.

"It’s not impossible, but I prefer to have a clear finish line. I want to make the most of these years," she concluded.
