Johaug has played her part by winning her 20th NM gold: - "The Tour has given me a form boost"
Therese Johaug easily won her 20th NM gold in the 20-kilometer race on Saturday, making her way decisively ahead of Heidi Weng at the ski exchange, finishing with a comfortable lead.
After the ski change, Johaug left Weng behind and cruised to victory with a significant gap, reinforcing her status as Norway's top female long-distance skier.
Johaug expressed her satisfaction, stating, "This was really good. I felt great and got solid responses during the race. The Tour de Ski has given me a form boost. Now I am able to push and work better with stiff legs."
Weng took silver but faced a substantial 1:16-minute deficit, with Kristin Austgulen Fosnæs securing the bronze medal, another minute behind.
This victory sets Johaug up as a formidable contender for the upcoming World Championships in Granåsen, especially as she has already excelled in the two World Cup 20-kilometer races held this season.
The race began with Johaug setting a high pace right from the start, allowing her to create a significant lead early on. Initially, only Weng, Fosnæs, and newcomer Nora Sanness could keep up with Johaug before the gap widened, especially during the skate segment.
In light of the World Championships, Norway has four spots available for the event and securing a podium finish not only reassures Johaug of her form but also highlights Fosnæs's strong candidacy for the last spot on the team.
Weng faced challenges leading up to the event due to sinus issues but her participation has been evidence of her fighting spirit in light of her recent setbacks.
As Johaug moves forward to the world championships, she remains the top contender on the 20-kilometer distance, demonstrating her skill and resilience in the sport. Gooo Team Norway!
