Johanna Matintalo's Unusual Decision in Ski Race: "I Would Prefer to Run"

Johanna Matintalo, a cross-country skier, made an unusual decision during the Finnish Cup in Ruka by opting not to compete in the women’s 20-kilometer mass start race. Instead, she was seen pedaling a stationary bike in the freezing conditions while closely following the competition on her phone. Matintalo mentioned in the commentary, "Of course, the race interests me, even though I am not participating."

Due to minor foot issues, Matintalo felt that competing was not the best choice and preferred to engage in cycling. Typically, she prefers running, which she finds more enjoyable. She remarked that nearly all national teams have stationary bikes available, especially during sprint days when many athletes cycle between heats.

Despite her absence from the race, she is looking forward to the upcoming World Cup sprint event in Ruka, expressing hope to be in good shape for that competition. In her absence, Vilma Nissinen unexpectedly won the 20-kilometer race, with Anne Kyllönen and Anni Alakoski taking the second and third places, respectively. Nissinen noted that she was confident of reaching the podium if the day went well.
