Jasmi Joensuu Understands Krista Pärmäkoski’s Controversial ‘Dog Solution’ – Blocks Finnish Coaches’ World Championship Selection
Originally published in Yle on February 10, 2025
Jasmi Joensuu has proven that his support dog, Keijo (affectionately known as Keke), is a central part of his athletic career. Speaking at the sports studio, he explained that having Keke by his side has been a tremendous source of strength, especially during challenging times both on and off the ski tracks.
The controversy arose when Krista Pärmäkoski, returning from the World Cup in Cognen, opted to travel by car and boat—a decision that many Finnish skiing commentators found suboptimal for recovery. Critics such as Sami Jauhojärvi, Reijo Jylhä, and Aino-Kaisa Saarinen voiced their concerns in various media outlets.
Joensuu, who is currently leading the World Cup sprint cup and eyeing a medal in the sprint and team sprint events at the upcoming World Championships in Trondheim, recalled that while the Finnish coaching staff had hoped he would participate in the 50 km race, he remains focused on the sprint events. He noted that his schedule post-World Championships is packed with two important sprint races and that his primary goal is to win the sprint cup—a feat achieved in Finnish history only once before by Virpi Kuitunen (now Sarasvuo).
Reflecting on the matter, Joensuu remarked that had someone told him before the championships that he would be leading the sprint cup, he would have found it hard to believe. He credits his rigorous training and careful management of his overall load for staying healthy, which he considers key to his success. His candid and heartfelt comments were further underscored by praise from his American coach.
Ultimately, Joensuu’s stance not only highlights his dedication to his own racing strategy but also casts a critical light on the decision-making process behind team selections for the world championships.
