Iivo Niskanen's Return to the National Team: What You Need to Know
Originally published in Yle on May 15, 2024
In a surprising turn of events, the Finnish Ski Association recently announced Iivo Niskanen's inclusion in the A-team roster for the upcoming season. While Niskanen has given his formal consent to be part of the team, he plans to pursue independent training until the fall, maintaining the solitary regimen he followed last season.
Niskanen's decision comes amid concerning financial news from the Ski Association, which has reported a staggering deficit of nearly two million euros. This situation has raised questions about the team's overall resources and capabilities. Despite his initial intent to stay out of the team structure, Niskanen has informally agreed to participate, with plans to officially join the team starting at the event in Ruka.
Key figures in this development include Team Head Coach Teemu Pasanen and Toni Roponen, a representative of the Olympic Committee’s skiing sector. They played crucial roles in facilitating Niskanen’s return, ensuring that he could integrate into the team without the need for a formal contract for the 2024-2025 season. Last year, Niskanen’s independent training, which received financial support from sports authorities, is now enhanced with new perks, such as complimentary performance tests. Pasanen and his colleagues remain hopeful about Niskanen participating in team activities from time to time.
