Norwegian sports community is in shock after the announcement that former cross-country skier and track athlete Marthe Katrine Myhre (39) has passed away. The news has been received with immense sorrow within the sports community.

Therese Johaug expressed her deep sorrow to NRK, stating, "I was shocked. It is incredibly sad news to receive. Completely terrible."

Johaug and Myhre competed together in two World Cup events in cross-country skiing in 2008 and 2009. After this, Myhre pursued a career in running and triathlon, achieving several prestigious medals, including NM gold medals in half-marathon and marathon.

The news of Myhre's passing was shared by her brother, Anders Myhre, on Sunday, stating that a doctor confirmed she died of natural causes. However, it was known that Myhre had struggled with eating disorders for many years, which her family wishes to be open about.

"The illness has unfortunately affected Marthe’s life since she was 15. There have been many ups and downs for her," said Anders to NRK.

Both Johan and Pål Golberg expressed their sadness and a desire to help others struggling with similar issues. Golberg emphasized the importance of reaching out and talking to those in need, stating, "If you see someone you think is struggling, it's much more important to have that conversation than to think it's not your role to do so."

Johaug praised the openness of Myhre's family regarding the eating disorder, highlighting that it is crucial to address such topics for younger girls in sports, emphasizing the serious consequences it can lead to.
