Heavy setback for cross-country star Frida Karlsson

Frida Karlsson, the star of cross-country skiing, is facing challenges due to injuries. Recently, it was announced that changes are being made concerning her training as she prepares for the crucial World Championship season.

Karlsson revealed that her body did not respond as she hoped after initial sessions on snow in Vålådalen, leading to the realization that she is not ready to ski yet. "Thus, I had to make a change to ensure I have the best conditions moving forward," Karlsson stated in an announcement.

As a result, she will not participate in the upcoming high-altitude training camp with her national teammates in Italy's Val Senales, opting instead for alternative rehabilitation training in Tenerife, Spain, where she'll focus on cycling and recovery at high altitude.

Team doctor Rickard Noberius explained the injuries impacting Karlsson's training schedule. "There is an overload in the soft tissues of her left foot, which combined with a tough training autumn has led to overuse and incorrect stress on her groin area," he noted. This situation means Karlsson will have to forgo snow training for rehabilitation and alternative training.

With only weeks left before the start of the season, this injury comes at an inconvenient time. The World Championships in Granåsen are a significant highlight for cross-country skiers, where Karlsson is typically a strong medal contender.

In addition, Karlsson recently made headlines by announcing her retirement plans, intending to conclude her career after the 2026/2027 season at just 27 years old. "There's more to life," she stated, with the Ski World Championships in Falun in 2027 set to be her last international event.
