Frida Karlsson Wins World Championship in 50 km

Frida Karlsson has been crowned the world champion in the 50 km freestyle race at the World Championships held in Trondheim on March 9, 2025. This impressive win makes her an integral part of the Swedish team's success, which clinched all gold medals in the women’s rankings during the championships.

At just 25 years old, this victory is the first major individual title of Karlsson's career. Previously, she had garnered gold medals in team relay events at other championships, but this marks her ascent to individual glory on the world stage. During the race, she crossed the finish line ahead of Norway’s Heidi Weng, who finished in second place (+2.1 seconds), and Therese Johaug, who came in third (+2.9 seconds).

This championship was notable for being the first time women competed in the 50 km race at the World Championships, as previous editions featured shorter distances (20 km and 30 km). The win not only highlights Karlsson's exceptional skill but also the dominance of Sweden in women’s cross-country events, mirroring Norway's earlier success in the championships.

Ebba Andersson, who was a gold medalist in the past, faced misfortune during the race, falling in the final kilometer while aiming for a podium spot, ultimately finishing fourth (+18.7 seconds). In contrast, the top French competitor, Flora Dolci, managed to finish ninth (+8:19.0).

After a break from competition to give birth, Therese Johaug returned at 36 years old with hopes pinned on these championships. However, despite bringing home three medals, she did not secure gold, which contrasts with her impressive past of being a four-time Olympic champion and fourteen-time world champion.
