The International Ski Federation (FIS) has granted an extension for the bid process concerning the 2029 World Championships in Lahti, Finland, allowing until July 4 for finalization. This decision follows a request from the Finnish Ski Association, which sought additional time to complete necessary financial assessments.
In partnership with the city of Lahti and the Lahti Ski Club, the Finnish Ski Association is striving to reach a consensus on the financial framework required to host this prestigious event. Sirpa Korkatti, the chair of the Finnish Ski Association, stressed the importance of establishing a cost-sharing agreement, noting that it is vital for the successful execution of the championships.
These Championships are anticipated to generate an impressive 40 million euros in economic benefits for the region. If successful, Lahti will make history as the first city to host the Nordic skiing World Championships for the eighth time.
Korkatti is optimistic about the future, stating that the event holds significant value not only for Lahti but also for the entire Finnish skiing community. She expressed confidence in finding solutions that will facilitate the event’s successful progression.
