These Finnish Athletes Selected for Their First Trips to the Nordic Skiing World Championships – Will Their Medal Tally Open Immediately?

The Finnish Ski Association has revealed its team selections for the Nordic skiing World Championships in Trondheim. On the first official competition day – Thursday, February 27 – the women’s sprint event will feature Jasmi Joensuu, Jasmin Kähärä, Katri Lylynperä, and Amanda Saari. For the men, the sprint team consists of Lauri Vuorinen, Joni Mäki, Niilo Moilanen, and Emil Liekari, with Hilla Niemelä serving as an alternate.
The championships continue on Saturday with the skiathlon, an event that combines 10 kilometres of classical style with 10 kilometres of free technique. For the women, the skiathlon team includes Kerttu Niskanen, Krista Pärmäkoski, Vilma Ryytty, and Jasmin Kähärä – a somewhat surprising selection given that a sprint specialist like Kähärä is chosen over a more experienced skiathlon competitor such as Vilma Nissinen. In the men’s skiathlon, Iivo Niskanen, Arsi Ruuskanen, Perttu Hyvärinen, and Niko Anttola have been named.
There is even a glimmer of potential for medals on the men’s side. Iivo Niskanen recently impressed in a 20 km free mass start at a World Cup event, recalling his Olympic bronze medal performance from the 2022 Pyeongchang games. The World Championships in Trondheim will be broadcast by Yle, and further details about the event and team rosters can be found through additional links on the Yle website.
