Finnish skier Niilo Moilanen marked an impressive fifth place in the Ruka sprint, which is his career-best result in the World Cup. The journey to this point has been challenging, as Moilanen faced a serious roller skiing accident during the summer when a cyclist unexpectedly collided with him, causing multiple fractures to his face. Fortunately, his helmet prevented more severe injuries, and after undergoing surgery, he returned to training.
On Saturday, Moilanen had an outstanding performance in Ruka, achieving fifth place, just shy of his previous best eighth place finish in Beitostølen two years ago. In the finals, the sprint was won by Norwegian Johannes Hösflot Kläbo, with Finland’s Lauri Vuorinen finishing third.
In his emotional interview post-race, Moilanen shared his thoughts about the summer's difficulties and the uncertainties he faced regarding his sporting future. He expressed a strong sense of accomplishment, stating, "It's been a rollercoaster. I experienced the toughest moment of my career this summer. There was uncertainty about whether I would even be able to compete. Seeing the recovery and improvement this season really highlights the good feelings now.
Moilanen noted his growth in mental strength, acknowledging the importance of confidence and trusting in his strengths, which allowed him to compete effectively against the top athletes. Looking ahead, Moilanen anticipates the upcoming championship in Trondheim, where he plans to utilize his adaptive skiing style and build on his current momentum.
