Finnish Ski Athletes Face New Expenses for World Cup Participation

Ilkka Herola believes that solutions are still possible beyond the controversial cost-sharing model being proposed by the Finnish Ski Federation.

National team skier Johanna Matintalo is already grappling with travel expenses from Rovaniemi to Helsinki. Recently reported, athletes on the national team will now be required to cover a portion of their expenses for each World Cup weekend this season, with contributions reaching as high as €500. This decision comes in light of the Federation's troubling financial situation.

Matintalo shared her unease regarding this development.
"It feels unpleasant that we have reached this point where our own resources are the means by which we start funding our competitive activities," she remarked.

Until now, the Federation has only covered travel expenses for athletes traveling from Helsinki to competitions. Athletes from other regions have always been responsible for their travel to the capital.

"Many have to live quite far away from the capital for various reasons. Those costs have always been our responsibility, and now this additional burden is just added on top," Matintalo pointed out.
"It’s a pretty absurd idea that we are already paying to participate in World Cup competitions before the season begins, and now we have to pay even more."

Matintalo expressed concern that this might set a precedent for athletes continuously bearing the costs of competition travel in the future.

"Of course, I understand that if there is no money, the costs need to be covered somehow. I believe taking from the athletes’ pockets should be one of the last resorts," she added.

While €500 might not appear excessive at first glance, domestic expenses can quickly accumulate. With numerous competition weekends throughout the season, the total expenses could mount significantly. Her spouse, Lauri Vuorinen, who is also a member of the national ski team, estimates their travel costs alone could reach between €5,000 and €10,000 for the season.

Matintalo is especially concerned about younger athletes who may get opportunities in World Cup events.
"Do all of them have the opportunity to go, even if they have a spot?” she questioned.

Herola is optimistic that alternative solutions can still be found.
"The fact that the board has discussed such an option does not mean that bills are on the move. As long as invoices have not been sent, there is a chance to figure out alternative funding."

He also sees some positive signs in this situation.
"Unlike previous years, it appears that there is now a clearer understanding of how much money is available. The situation is now on a healthier footing. This option is on the table, but I hope and believe that everyone will do their utmost to avoid going down the contribution route."
