Kyrönpelto Military Area's Skiing Trails Reopen for Winter

The Finnish Defence Forces are reopening the skiing trails in the Kyrönpelto military zone located in Mikkeli, which have been inaccessible since February 2022. These trails were closed following the increase in security measures due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
As winter approaches, Mikkeli city is set to open several of these trails, particularly those near the Kyrönpelto shooting range. Tiina Juhola, the city's sports manager, reported that the city proposed the reopening to the Defence Forces and plans to launch a connecting track from Kalevankangas to Kyrönpelto as well.
While skiing enthusiasts will have access, it is crucial to note that movement within the area remains limited to marked routes only. The skiing season in Mikkeli is expected to commence on schedule, starting with the Rantakylä early snow track, which is anticipated to be ready by early November, around Father’s Day.
Initially, the Defence Forces had closed the Karkialampi and Kyrönpelto military area trails in February 2022, adjusting the security status of the Mikkeli garrison in response to the geopolitical climate. Skiers are reminded to stick to the designated paths while enjoying the beautiful winter landscape.
