Iivo Niskanen's victory and Lauri Vuorinen's third-place finish crowned a successful weekend for Finnish winter sports. In the post-event analysis, discussions on athletic performances and future predictions were prominent.
The women's 20-kilometer freestyle mass start concluded the cross-country skiing competitions at Ruka, with Therese Johaug setting the pace. A total of 14-time world champion Therese Johaug returned to the World Cup trails after a 2.5-year hiatus, spurred on by the upcoming World Championships in Trondheim next February.
Despite her struggles with training alongside family responsibilities, Johaug demonstrated exceptional fitness, finishing second in the traditional ten-kilometer event. Even though she did not win any competition this weekend, her strength was evident as she maintained a strong pace in the 20-kilometer event, finishing fourth.
"She showed good form with no dominant edge, and whether this level is enough for victories in Trondheim remains to be seen," evaluated Yle Sports expert Aino-Kaisa Saarinen.
Iivo Niskanen resoundingly returned to form, having previously skipped the Finnish Cup while recovering from illness. He showcased a dynamic performance, signaling a clear intention as he looks to reclaim prominence after an absence in the podium standings over two years. Saarinen noted, "With his start, he exploded onto the scene and reaffirmed his title as King of Ruka, with energetic celebrations at the finish."
Lauri Vuorinen also achieved his first-ever individual podium place in the World Cup last spring, following it up with another strong performance at Ruka, described as a wake-up call to Norwegian competitors.
Moreover, Finnish men’s team found success in biathlon, finishing fifth in the 4x7.5 kilometer relay, while challenging moments were faced by Fanny Kukonlehto, who missed the start due to a procedural oversight by her technician, leading to substantial disappointment.
In a lighter moment during the men’s 20 kilometers, a hare unexpectedly crossed paths with the racers, adding a peculiar twist to the event as noted by the Yle commentator.
Looking ahead, ski jumpers will prepare for competition in Wisla, while the World Cups for skiing and Nordic combined will continue in Lillehammer this coming weekend.
