Finlandia Skiing Joins the Ski Classics Series
The legendary Finlandia Skiing event has elevated its profile by becoming a challenger competition in the prestigious Ski Classics series. This renowned long-distance skiing event allows participants to choose between classic and free skiing techniques over a grueling 62-kilometer course, while now offering athletes the chance to earn points towards the Ski Classics Pro Tour.
Event organizers are optimistic that this new status will attract a larger group of competitors from the Ski Classics series in the coming years. According to Markku Levanen, the event director, this transition is crucial for improving the event's competitive visibility and potentially paving the way for Pro Tour status in the future.
First launched in 1973 against the scenic backdrop of Salpausselkä, the Finlandia Skiing event has always welcomed recreational athletes, who comprise the majority of its participants. Levanen emphasized a desire to enhance the event’s international presence, aiming to increase the current rate of foreign competitors, which stands at 15%.
