Cross-country skiing: Erik Valnes dropped out - stopped by doctor due to heart issues
Originally published in SVT Sport on December 08, 2024
Erik Valnes, a Norwegian skiing star, was forced to withdraw from the 20 km skiathlon in Lillehammer due to heart problems. He reported that the doctor stopped him from competing after noting his irregular heartbeat. Valnes described this sensation as his heart fluttering and admitted he experiences such episodes three to four times a year.
Team doctor Ove Feragen stated that while the situation was not dramatic, it would be closely monitored. Valnes was well behind the leading group when he withdrew, and the race was ultimately won by fellow Norwegian Harald Østberg Amundsen.
This incident echoes the recent case of Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold, who also experienced heart issues during competition, underscoring the importance of health monitoring in high-level sports competitions.
