Sjur Røthe, the accomplished 35-year-old cross-country skier, has announced his retirement from competitive skiing. He shared the news with fans on his Instagram account, marking the end of an impressive career.

In his heartfelt message, he reflected on his 13 years with the national team: “It has brought me a wealth of experiences, filled with enormous highs, some lows, and unforgettable moments with my closest friends. I will still train, but not at the elite level.” Røthe, a former world champion, expressed gratitude for his journey but recognized that it was time to step back.

Speaking to VG, Røthe further explained his decision, stating, “I find it hard to believe I can win a World Cup again. Although it wasn't long ago that I secured an individual medal, my performance since has not been consistent.” His last individual medal was won at the World Championships in Planica in 2023.

Røthe faced significant challenges last season due to illness and injury, which ultimately led to him being dropped from the national team this year. “Not being able to ski fast for such a long time has affected my confidence. I had plans to compete in the World Championships in Trondheim, but right now, that seems uncertain,” he admitted.

As he embarks on this new chapter away from the competitive arena, Røthe leaves behind a legacy that includes three World Championship gold medals and three bronze medals, a testament to his talent and dedication to the sport.
