Will Petter Northug Secure a Spot in the Upcoming World Championships?

Petter Northug, the celebrated former champion of cross-country skiing, has set his sights on the upcoming World Championships in Norway. Although he has stepped back from national team competitions, he is determined to carve out a place for himself through the Scandinavia Cup this winter. Northug's extensive competitive history includes not only World Championships but also various Ski Classics events.

Despite his resolve, Northug faces a challenging path. He candidly acknowledges that his chances of making it onto the Norwegian team are slim, estimated at around just a few percent. Eirik Myhr Nossum, the team's coach, emphasizes that Northug must consistently finish in the top three during World Cup events to have any hope of securing a spot.

One of the significant challenges for Northug will be managing his training regime effectively to stay competitive against a field of younger athletes who benefit from recent advancements in conditioning and recovery techniques. Former competitor Anders Aukland adds that age may work against Northug, as a decline in oxygen uptake is likely, which can hinder performance in shorter races.

In a lighter moment, Aukland quips that if Northug were Swedish, he might have a better chance of qualifying, thanks to the relatively less intense domestic competition compared to the highly competitive Norwegian scene.
