Billionaire Christer Gardell Promises More Support
Businessman Christer Gardell has opened his wallet for Swedish sports. After investing million amounts in cross-country ski athletes Jonna Sundling, Edvin Anger, and Emma Ribom, he now hints that more athletes could receive support.
- "You can safely assume that many have reached out," Gardell told SVT Sport.
In a video, Gardell explains why he chose to sponsor Jonna Sundling, one of the highest-earning athletes in Swedish skiing. Gardell, who has a history in elite sports himself, expresses a strong interest in cross-country skiing, having followed it since childhood.
- "They fight hard, and when they cross the finish line, they are completely exhausted, leaving everything on the track. They serve as excellent role models for Swedish youth," he said.
At 64 years old, Gardell views sponsorship as part of a larger social responsibility.
- "Sports are crucial for public health, integration, and national pride. We need to rebuild Swedish elite sports again."
Numerous Inquiries for Support
Since the announcement of sponsorship for these skiers became public, inquiries for Gardell's support have been flooding in.
- "You can safely assume that many have reached out. All sorts of people. But that's just fun," Gardell said.
He sees his commitment as a way to assist Swedish sports in getting back on track and emphasizes that the business sector needs to take a larger responsibility.
- "We must rebuild Swedish elite sports again. I hope that more companies and individuals with financial means will step up."
