Arne Baumann, the secretary general of the Norwegian Ski Federation, has announced his resignation, effective at the end of November.

The federation shared the news on Monday afternoon, stating Baumann's decision to step down. In a press release, he expressed his reflections on the past year, saying, “I have had a very exciting and educational year as secretary general of the Norwegian Ski Federation. I am passionate about skiing at both grassroots and elite levels, but I have concluded that I want other work challenges moving forward.” He was keen to clarify that his departure was not due to any internal conflict.

The Ski Federation acknowledged: “We wished for Arne to continue in the role, but we respect his choice. He has done a remarkable job during his tenure. His expertise, diverse experience, and dedication have greatly benefited the organization, and he will leave with outstanding references,” said ski president Tove Moe Dyrhaug.

Transition Ahead

The search for Baumann's successor is now in motion as the organization gears up for the winter season starting in November.

During his time as secretary general, the 62-year-old faced various challenges, including controversies involving the ski jumping team and disputes over the national team agreement raised by top alpine athletes.

Financial Pressures

The Ski Federation is also grappling with significant financial difficulties. In light of these challenges, ski licenses for trainers have seen substantial increases ahead of the new season, especially for skiers, whose fees have jumped from NOK 1,900 to NOK 4,200. Cross-country skiing and telemark disciplines have witnessed the largest percentage hikes.

Every athlete over the age of 13 is required to hold a license that provides insurance coverage for injuries sustained during training and competitions. Baumann addressed these increases, stating, “The main reason for the increase is that treatment costs have significantly risen in recent years, alongside a substantial increase in the number of injuries covered by the scheme.”

A Legacy of Leadership

Appointed in April of last year, Baumann brought over 20 years of experience from his previous role at housing giant Obos, where he was part of the executive board overseeing residential construction.

Interestingly, he is the son of former ski president Johan Baumann, who led the federation from 1987 to 1995.

The secretary general role became vacant following Ingvild Bretten Berg's settlement with the federation in late August 2022.
