Cross-country skier Anna Dyvik has bravely opened up about her battle with mental health after the recent Winter Olympics in Beijing. Finishing 17th and facing elimination in the quarterfinals left her in a tough emotional state. Dyvik recalls waking up some mornings overwhelmed by a profound sense of meaninglessness that made it difficult to motivate herself to get out of bed.
In her candid YouTube video, she aimed to debunk the myth that elite athletes are invincible superhumans. Sharing her experiences from the challenging months that followed the Olympics, Dyvik expressed the heavy toll that competition can take on one's mental well-being.
Although she felt hesitant at first about revealing such personal struggles, Dyvik ultimately decided it was crucial to discuss mental health openly. Her journey included significant support from her partner, Gustav Eriksson, her mental coach, Anneli Östberg, and her close friend on the national team, Moa Ilar. Their encouragement played a key role in helping her navigate through her negative feelings.
Anna Dyvik is now a strong advocate for transparency regarding mental health issues in sports. She emphasizes the need for athletes to share their struggles and support one another, helping to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health in the competitive realm.
