Two activists have been sentenced for violating public order after running onto the track during the Vasaloppet earlier this year. Each was fined a total of 2,000 kronor. The men, both in their 50s, entered the track about one kilometer from the finish line just as this year's winner was approaching. They were swiftly removed by officials before causing any disruption to the event.
Activists were present to hold the race accountable, and reports indicated that climate organization Restoring Wetlands claimed responsibility for the action shortly after the incident.
According to their defense, the two men admitted to the events but denied any wrongdoing, arguing that they acted out of necessity regarding their environmental concerns. However, the court stated that for such a claim of necessity to be valid, there needs to be evident immediate action to protect the climate, which they lacked in this case.
Vasaloppet has long been one of Sweden's premier long-distance ski races, attracting participants and spectators from around the world, making the recent disruption a notable event in the series.
