TV Production Blunder at World Championships – Missed the Golden Moment
Originally published in NRK Sport on February 15, 2025
In a dramatic turn during the World Championships in biathlon, a major TV production error prevented Norwegian viewers from seeing the crucial gold series in the sprint event. Johannes Thingnes Bø, who delivered a flawless performance by hitting every target in both the prone and standing shooting stages, secured his 21st world championship gold – a performance that overtook Ole Einar Bjørndalen’s record of 20 golds.
Commentator Marius Skjelbæk from TV 2 described the incident as being close to scandalous, pointing out that the live images of Bø, along with teammates Sturla Holm Lægreid and Sebastian Samuelsson, were not shown from the shooting stand while the producer's feed displayed alternate images.
TV 2 expert and biathlon legend Ole Einar Bjørndalen was particularly incensed by the error. "Today it was one out of ten points. It was terrible. You can’t risk losing the live view of a big favorite," said Bjørndalen, questioning whether the production team had even been present when the decisive moment unfolded.
On behalf of the International Biathlon Union, Christian Winkler expressed his apologies to NRK and the Norwegian audience. "First and foremost, we must say this was a mistake. The fact that Johannes’ final shooting wasn’t shown cannot happen. We apologize, especially to the Norwegian public who missed witnessing it live," Winkler stated, adding that the production will be reviewed thoroughly.
Not everyone was livid, however. Johannes Thingnes Bø himself remained unfazed by the incident, remarking, "It’s a bit unfortunate, but it happens sometimes. Not all producers have the level of insight needed, and sometimes things go wrong." In contrast, Endre Strømsheim was harsh in his assessment, declaring that the producer’s error was inexcusable and that production quality must meet the high stakes of a championship.
Veteran commentator Vebjørn Sørum also criticized the mishap, emphasizing the ongoing struggles the broadcast had faced in capturing the pivotal moments, especially in the women’s events. Sebastian Samuelsson described the error as "heartbreaking," though he sympathized with the production challenges given the rapid succession of important moments. Tarjei Bø, brother of Johannes, pointed out that the incident was a form of payback for recent changes in the starting order imposed by the IBU, saying, "They got a taste of it today."
The broadcast error came at a historic moment as Johannes Thingnes Bø not only dominated the sprint but also wrote his name in biathlon history. His brilliant shooting performance meant that no one could keep up with the Norwegian, marking the end of Ole Einar Bjørndalen’s era as the most decorated at World Championships.
In addition to the Norwegian triumph, the race saw a sensational performance from American Campbell Wright, who captured the silver medal, and Quinton Fillon-Maillet, who claimed bronze. Vebjørn Sørum narrowly missed a medal with a couple of missed shots, finishing fourth, while four other Norwegian athletes rounded out the top ten.
Officials and commentators alike have vowed to learn from this production blunder to ensure that future broadcasts do not deprive viewers of witnessing these once-in-a-lifetime moments in biathlon.
