Shock revelation on live TV: Tarjei Bø retires

Tarjei Bø (36) announced his retirement from biathlon after this season, confirming it during a live broadcast on NRK.

Tears flowed for Tarjei Bø after revealing he is stepping back from the sport he loves, saying: "This is my last season. I felt it today when I won: 'This is the moment.' Now I can retire at the top, at least for today."

Bø spoke to NRK right after winning his 44th World Cup victory at the sprint race in Anterselva – the venue for the 2026 Olympic biathlon events. He reflected on his decision, stating, "It’s nice, big, and special to share this now. You often think about how you want to tell the world, and I thought I would share it after winning another race this year. I'm proud of what I did today, proud of my career, and I’m grateful to share this day with my loved ones here watching."

Bø noted that this weekend concludes with the finals of the Australian Open, which airs on Max and Eurosport Norway.

The biathlon veteran was emotional while discussing his decision, especially considering his younger brother, Johannes Thingnes Bø, also announced his retirement recently, a move that didn't surprise Tarjei, as he revealed to NRK.

Johannes commented: "What better way to end your career than to win a race and retire at the top? It’s beautiful." He praised Tarjei, saying, "Everything that was said about me last weekend applies even more to him. He has been a true role model for everyone who loves biathlon and a true legend of the sport."

In addition to his 44 World Cup wins, Bø has an impressive total of 111 podium finishes, including 14 world and Olympic gold medals. His career boasts a remarkable total of 34 World Championship and Olympic medals, and he also won the overall World Cup in the 2010/11 season.

Tarjei added, "After this season began, I felt it was the last training period in my life. I wanted to race and it’s demanding to prepare for the Olympics, requiring a lot of energy, and I feel this is the right moment."

Upcoming Events: The next biathlon competition will focus on different country teams, and fans will see how both brothers transition into their new lives post-retirement.
