Östersund ansöker om skidskytte-VM 2031
Östersund is making a bid to host the Biathlon World Championships in 2031. Having recently secured World Cup competitions for the next four years, this move showcases Östersund’s ambition to be a key player in the international biathlon scene.
Rikard Grip, the secretary-general of the Swedish Biathlon Federation, expressed that being a consistent holder of World Cup events positions Östersund favorably for such prestigious championships. The decision on who will host the World Championships will be made in fall 2026.
Östersund previously hosted the World Championships in biathlon in 1970 and 2008, with the latest event taking place in 2019. This new bid also reflects an intention to collaborate closely with Östersund municipality and the wider Jämtland region to create an event that represents all of Sweden.
"We do it together with Östersund municipality and the entire region of Jämtland, aiming for this to be a championship for the whole of Sweden," said Grip.
This initiative comes at a time when Östersund is recognized for its strong international presence in biathlon, making its candidacy even more compelling.
Stay tuned for updates as the bid progresses!
