Illegal Intravenous Injection by Coach Lands Athlete in Intensive Care – Coach Convicted in Court

Two athletes from skiing disciplines were hospitalized after their coach improperly administered intravenous injections. The coach, who was not medically trained to provide IV drugs, injected the two athletes with Cytoflavin and Ryboksyn preparations along with glucose in November last year in Sotkamo. Cytoflavin is generally used in the management of cerebral circulation disorders, and Ryboksyn (also known as Riboksin) is intended for heart and vascular treatment.
Both athletes developed severe symptoms including vomiting, fever, and a drop in blood pressure following the injections. One of the athletes required three days in intensive care, and as a result of ongoing insomnia and heart problems, this athlete has been unable to continue active training. The other athlete has since competed abroad in biathlon events.
The 55‐year‐old coach, who admitted to the charges, was found guilty of recklessly endangering the athletes and was sentenced to 68 daily fines totaling 408 euros. In addition, he was ordered to pay 4,000 euros in compensation for pain, suffering, and temporary harm to one of the athletes, plus an additional 1,000 euros for prolonged suffering. The verdict, delivered by the Kainuu District Court, is not yet final.
Note: Both the coach and the athletes are reported to be foreigners.
