IBU Implements New Seeding Protocol for Biathlon World Cup

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) is set to implement significant changes to the seeding protocol for the upcoming World Cup races. Historically, top-ranked athletes could select their starting groups for sprints and individual events, often choosing earlier starts. While this practice allowed elite competitors to race in less congested conditions, it sometimes diminished the overall excitement of the competition.

In an effort to heighten both viewer engagement and suspense, the IBU has announced that starting numbers for the 15 highest-ranked athletes will now be randomly assigned within a range of 46 to 75. This new approach aims to create a more competitive atmosphere by mixing the field.

This decision follows thorough consultations with the athlete commission, the IBU's technical committee, and various national federations. The revised system will undergo a trial period during the first four weeks of the World Cup in November and December 2024, at which point its effectiveness will be assessed. Additionally, in the event of adverse weather, the race jury will maintain the authority to allow top-ranked athletes to start earlier, ensuring fairness during challenging conditions.
