Biathlon Star Embraces New Adventure
Janina Hettich-Walz, the accomplished biathlete, is excited to announce that she is expecting her first child! Despite the life-changing news, she is unwavering in her commitment to compete in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan.
At just 28 years old, Hettich-Walz looks forward to the joys of parenting while also gearing up for the winter season ahead. The timing of her pregnancy might seem unexpected, with a significant event only 18 months away, but she remains hopeful about her Olympic aspirations.
A silver medalist from the 2021 World Championships in Nové Město, Hettich-Walz has set her sights clearly on returning to top form.
Hettich-Walz: “That’s also my plan”
"As long as I feel healthy, I intend to keep training and stay fit for as long as I can. My goal is to be part of the team in the 2025/26 season and compete at the Olympics in Milan," Hettich-Walz shared, highlighting her determination.
She draws inspiration from other athletes who have successfully made comebacks after childbirth and is eager to follow in their footsteps. "There are many examples of athletes returning to elite competition after having a baby – that’s the path I plan to take," she explained.
Before entering her maternity leave, she aims to compete in the German Championships at the end of August in Altenberg and the City Biathlon on September 15 in Dresden, provided her pregnancy continues smoothly. During her subsequent break, she plans to train at a manageable pace in her hometown of Schönwald.
Full Support from the DSV
During a recent training camp in Norway, following the Blink Festival in Sandnes, Hettich-Walz revealed her news to her team, receiving overwhelming support. "I was deeply touched by how happy everyone was for me," she remarked, reflecting on the warm congratulations from her teammates.
The German Ski Federation (DSV) stands firmly behind her, with Biathlon Sports Director Felix Bitterling emphasizing, "We will provide her with all the support she needs in the coming months to ensure Janina can compete vigorously in the Olympic season of 2025/26 as she plans."
