Antonia Horn Bids Farewell to Her Biathlon Career
German biathlete Antonia Horn has officially announced her retirement due to a serious injury, prioritizing her health over her athletic career. The 27-year-old athlete shared the news via an emotional post on Instagram, accompanied by a collection of photos from her childhood and professional journey.
Horn's decision comes in the wake of a significant injury sustained in the summer of 2023 when she tore the posterior cruciate ligament in her left knee. Reflecting on her ordeal, she said, "Since my accident 14 months ago, I haven't been fighting for success and medals, but for my health."
She recalled the bittersweet journey: "After initial optimistic progress, I faced a painful setback and grappled with uncertainty about whether I would ever run properly again." For Horn, being able to run without fear is the greatest gift, and this realization made her decision clearer. "I choose my health," she affirmed.
A Shift from Cross-Country to Biathlon
In 2022, Horn made the switch from cross-country skiing to biathlon, a transition that surprised many, considering her remarkable history in the sport. She was hailed as one of Germany's brightest cross-country skiing talents during her youth, showcasing her skills at the Nordic Junior World Championships where she clinched a bronze in 2016 and a silver in the sprint event the following year. Notably, she also emerged as the German champion in the team sprint in 2020 and represented Germany at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Reflecting on her athletic journey, Horn said, "I've achieved everything I could only dream of as a child, traveled the world, formed lifelong friendships, and experienced the highs and lows of being an athlete."
A New Direction: Pursuing Passion Projects
As Horn transitions away from competitive sports, she emphasizes her gratitude for her athletic experiences. "I am infinitely grateful for what I have been able to experience as an athlete over the years, but my priorities have changed," she expressed.
Looking ahead, Horn intends to rebuild her former profession as a hobby, focusing all her energy and passion on a new venture. With her husband Philipp, she plans to launch a tourist project named "Base Camp Oberhof" in the renowned winter sports hub of Oberhof. The project aims to provide accommodation and a café for guests, marking an exciting new chapter in her life.
