Biathlon World Cup: Preuß's Tough Day - Frenchwoman Botet Surprises in Oberhof

Published: 09.01.2025

In a challenging sprint race held in the rain and fog of Oberhof, Franziska Preuß failed to replicate her recent performances, ultimately finishing 28th with three penalties while Paula Botet from France secured a surprising victory.

Preuß expressed disappointment in her performance, emphasizing that the race conditions significantly affected her ability to compete at her usual level. "My race was really poor; I felt okay but the conditions just got worse and worse," she said in an interview, questioning the decision of the IBU to maintain the race schedule despite the inclement weather.

Botet's triumph marks her return to the World Cup after competing in the IBU Cup, and she couldn't believe her victory: "I thought so many would overtake me; I can't believe it!" Other competitors also struggled, with several being unable to perform at their best due to the adverse weather conditions.

Despite the disappointing race, Preuß retains her lead in the overall World Cup standings, having entered the sprint with a significant advantage. The Oberhof event will continue with the pursuit and mixed relay events to follow, allowing athletes another chance to compete under potentially improved conditions.
