Biathlon: Unusual Shooting Maneuver Revealed – Rules to Change
Originally published in NRK on December 14, 2024
In a recent sprint competition in Hochfilzen, the French biathlete Jeanne Richard, age 22, used an unusual shooting technique that led to an extraordinary situation affecting the competition rules. During her standing shooting series, Richard shot four hits and one miss, but instead of taking the required penalty lap for the miss, she fired an additional shot, believing she had not fired one of the earlier shots correctly.
This incident has caught the attention of the International Biathlon Union (IBU), which is now reviewing regulations around misfires. According to IBU sports director Daniel Böhm, the incident was unprecedented and has led to the decision to change the rules to specify that a misfire is considered a shot and should not be replaced by an additional one.
Experts from NRK commented on the rarity of such occurrences in the sport, noting that Richard's actions, while understandable in the heat of competition, highlighted a gap in the current regulations. As the rules are clarified, the focus remains not only on following the guidelines but also on ensuring that athletes are properly trained to avoid similar overruns in the future. Richard's coach expressed that the entire situation was surprising and emphasized the need for clearer guidelines in the sport.
