Biathlon: Swedish Reaction to the World Championship Trend – 'Hope We Don't Have to Shave Our Heads'
Originally published in SVT Sport on February 22, 2025
The article reports on a peculiar trend observed during the Biathlon World Championships: athletes are shaving their heads after winning gold. This trend, which reportedly began during the alpine World Championships when the Swiss team brought out a razor, has now made its way to biathlon. French biathlete Eric Perrot is among those who have already taken the plunge, and the coach of German star Franziska Preuss, as well as Perrot himself, have experienced significant hair loss as a result.
In contrast, the Swedish team has not yet made any commitments in this regard. Jesper Nelin even mentioned that he already has someone in mind he would like to challenge if such a trend were to be adopted, though he does not believe that person is willing to take part. Ella Halvarsson, a member of the women’s relay team, expressed her hope that none of the Swedish athletes will feel pressured to shave their heads.
The relay events are set for Saturday, with the women’s race beginning at 12:05 and the men’s at 15:05. The events will be broadcast on SVT1 and SVT Play from 11:30, providing viewers with a close-up look at how this unusual trend might influence team dynamics and celebrations.
