Originally published in SVT Sport on December 03, 2023
In a challenging day for the Swedish biathlon team during the 15km event in Kontiolax, Sebastian Samuelsson and Martin Ponsiluoma both performed poorly, leading to a disappointing result. The Norwegian Endre Strömsheim emerged as the surprise winner, crossing the finish line just seconds ahead of competition giant Johannes Thingnes Bö.
The Swedish team struggled significantly, with none of the competitors in contention—a total of 32 missed shots reflects the difficulties faced, particularly by Ponsiluoma, who tallied seven misses in his first lying position shoot.
Sebastian Samuelsson expressed his frustration after the race, stating, "It was not good; I don't have any good answers." The top-performing Swedish athlete was Jesper Nelin, who finished 33rd—over three minutes behind the winner. The team’s coach, Johannes Lukas, suggested that while the day was tough, the team shouldn't overly analyze the results, pointing out previous successes over the weekend.
Looking ahead, the competition continues with further events scheduled for the week, including women’s short distance and men’s sprint.
