Biathlon Star Discusses Comeback
For the upcoming World Cup season, biathlete Janina Hettich-Walz will not be participating due to her pregnancy. The two-time vice-world champion has spoken about her comeback plans.
Hettich-Walz stated, "I am in constant contact with the coaches and doctors, discussing the important processes ahead. They are getting a good grasp on this new situation, and we are trying to find the best path for me and the baby. The focus is clearly on listening to my body and aligning the training accordingly," the 28-year-old explained in an interview.
Hettich-Walz Wants to Take a Pioneering Role
She added, "In German biathlon, there has not been a case in recent years where an active female athlete takes a maternity leave and then wants to return to competitive sports. It is also a new situation for the coaches, but they are fully embracing the challenge, and we want to find the best possible way for all of us."
Hettich-Walz expressed her wish to wait and see how her situation develops but is inclined to take a pioneering role, demonstrating that combining family and professional sports as a woman is possible.
Aim for the 2026 Olympics
Looking forward, the biathlete has a clear plan. "Last winter, I achieved many sporting goals and would like to build on the level I had during the last season. The Olympics play an important role, as I want to be part of that. However, my private goals come first - I have always wanted a family, and I’m looking forward to that," she stated.
Last season, Hettich-Walz ranked as the best DSV athlete, finishing tenth in the overall World Cup. She has been married to Kai Walz since 2022.
