Enhanced Prize Money for Biathlon Athletes
Biathlon athletes can anticipate a boost in their earnings this upcoming season, as the International Biathlon Union (IBU) announces increased prize money for select races.
This adjustment applies to both the World Cup and the World Championships, specifically focusing on individual competitions. The overall prize pool for individual events within the World Cup—which includes sprints, pursuits, mass starts, and individual races—will rise from €93,750 to €101,500 per event.
World Cup: Prize Money Distribution for the Top 30 Competitors
Notably, the changes do not impact the top two positions. The first-place finisher will still receive €15,000, while the runner-up takes home €12,000. The new prize distribution system will now kick in from third place onwards, benefiting a total of 30 athletes in individual races. The athlete who finishes in 30th place will earn €200.
For the World Championships, the prize money for individual races will also see a modest increase from €140,800 to €144,250. Here, unlike the World Cup, the second-place athlete will see enhanced rewards. The world champion retains their €25,000, while the prize for second place is elevated by €1,000 to €20,000. The athlete finishing in third place will now earn €15,000, up from €14,000, with prizes distributed up to the 30th position.
No Changes to Prize Money for Biathlon Relay Events
In stark contrast, relay events will not see any changes in prize money. The winning nation will continue to receive €26,000, with the second-place nation awarded €20,000, and the third-place nation earning €16,000. At the World Championships, these prizes will be slightly higher: first place receives €30,000, second place earns €24,000, and third place takes home €20,000. Prizes in both the World Cup and World Championships for relays will extend up to eighth place.
Additionally, in the single-mixed relay, the prize structure remains unchanged, with distribution up to eighth place totaling €47,000. The first-place team will earn €13,000, second place gets €10,000, and third place receives €8,000. The IBU will offer even higher awards at World Championships, where winners will take home €15,000, second place will receive €12,000, and third place will get €10,000, with eighth place awarded €3,000.
Earnings for Leaders in the Overall World Cup
The IBU will also reward the leaders in the overall World Cup standings and each individual discipline. The overall leader, wearing the coveted yellow jersey, earns €1,000 for each race, while leaders in individual disciplines will be rewarded with €850 per race.
