Austrian biathlete Anna Gandler’s long-awaited season highlight, the Biathlon World Championships in Lenzerheide, has come to an abrupt end. The 24-year-old, who had trained for a year with the expectation of competing in the 15km individual race, was forced into hospital care with a high fever.

Earlier in the championships, Gandler had participated in the mixed relay and sprint events. However, after posting an Instagram story from her hospital bed expressing her immense disappointment, it became clear that she could no longer take part in her scheduled race. Following this, she returned to her home country, and her teammate Lea Rothschopf was nominated as her replacement.

Gandler’s situation has sparked an outpouring of support on social media, as fans and fellow athletes expressed their sympathy and encouragement during this challenging time.
